Making “Figure/Ground” Part 4:
Ice Cream and Vector Graphics!

This week deals with the creation of my movies third sequence, entitled “September 29”.
This is a short sequence where I am smuggling ice cream into dad’s hospital room. We filmed the sequence using an empty, blank Styrofoam cup. I created an ice cream logo graphic for the cup in Adobe Illustrator.
This blog entry is part of an ongoing series documenting the creation of my short film, “Figure/Ground”, about the death of my father, starring veteran actor Allan Kulakow. The finished film is a hybrid of photographic and painted imagery, created using Photoshop, After Effects and Final Cut Pro. The film uses many of the techniques discussed in my book “Digital Art Revolution”. I’ll document my techniques, approaches, decision process and frustrations in hopes that they’ll be of interest to digital artists and filmmakers.
I painstakingly distort it around the cup in each frame and paint in shading. I have to match the perspective of the cup perfectly in every frame or the logo would appear to jump around on the cup. To my surprise, it works perfectly on the first try. This happens to be the same week that I’m introducing Illustrator to my Digital Class at the Cleveland Institute of Art. I get to say, “Hey! Look what I made in Illustrator.” Goofy teacher.
