Season’s Greetings! This week discusses my work on a sequence entitled “October 28”. This sequence, dealing with my father returning home from the hospital, is easier than the previous one. Big blank walls and sharp edges make it easy to mask the figures.
This blog entry is part of an ongoing series documenting the creation of my short film, “Figure/Ground”, about the death of my father, starring veteran actor Allan Kulakow. The finished film is a hybrid of photographic and painted imagery, created using Photoshop, After Effects and Final Cut Pro. The film uses many of the techniques discussed in my book “Digital Art Revolution”. I’ll document my techniques, approaches, decision process and frustrations in hopes that they’ll be of interest to digital artists and filmmakers.
The biggest challenge in this sequence? There was a close up of my father’s suitcase which was blurry because I blew it up from a smaller image. I had to paint into it quite a bit to define the edges well enough. It still doesn’t look quite right and bugs me a bit, but I think it’s okay.
