As I’ve mentioned in my book and countless lectures, one of the most revolutionary aspects of digital technology is that it blurs the boundaries between mediums to the point of irrelevance. Video artist Kidist Getachew, my co-worker at the Cleveland Institute of Art, showed me this amazing video today and remarked that it is a perfect example of this blurring of boundaries.
The animation is created by painting and building on a physical environment, but would have been impossible without the ability to digitally document and animate all the images. What is the art? Is it the video? Is it the painting? It’s ultimately only possible because of the synthesis of the digital and the physical.
