Digital Art Revolution Artist Kaethe Kauffman at Kathleen Cullen Gallery in New York

Kaethe Kauffman is one of the many great artists featured in Digital Art Revolution, creating Fine Art with Photoshop. Her evocative work is the subject of a solo show at the esteemed Kathleen Cullen Gallery in New York City.

The opening reception is July 18 at 6pm. The show runs until August 17. You can see the new work at kaethekauffman.com/MuscleMovement.

I had the pleasure to meet with Dr. Kauffman in Honolulu a couple years ago.

A couple people sent me their solutions to the “15 Green Things” project in Digital Art Revolution, Creating Fine Art with Photoshop, and I wanted to present this fine and inventive work for you. The image above is from Teresa Thompson and the image below is from Lynn C. Fisher.

Both of these images were created using the same 15 lime green, highly processed images and nothing else. The goal of this project is to take these elements, which are nearly useless in their current state, and modify them to create a single, purposeful work of art. Artists can modify them, they can cut them up, they can use them more than once, but they can’t use any other images or create new ones.

This is a creativity exercise. Even when working with the most unusable elements, where the majority of design solutions are eliminated, the possibilities are still endless. My students have come up with many original and consistent images using only these elements. Their designs are very different from each other. Scott and Jimmy are talking to University of Toledo educators about their experiences integrating iPads into the first year curriculum at CIA as part of the Digital Canvas Initiative.

iPad Animation with Flip Boom Draw

I just did a little 30 second animation on the iPad, using Flip Boom Draw. I recorded the “whooaaa” sound effects on the iPad too, using the free app Sound Recorder with Skins Lite. (You’ll know what I mean when you see the video.)

I’m helping to spearhead the Digital Canvas Initiative at the Cleveland Institute of Art, where the iPad is being integrated into the Foundation Curriculum. This is going to be an assignment for our Foundation Digital Classes and I made this animation as a sample. Each student must make a 30 second black and white animated video. They must begin and end their video with a straight horizontal line down the middle so they can all connect together. It’s not a masterpiece but I had fun! See it below! -Scott

Last week, it was part of the Silicon Valley Film Festival Figure-Ground. This week Digital Art Revolution author Scott Ligon’s new short film about the death of his father, is being shown as part of the Louisville's International Festival of Film in Louisville, KY, Thursday, October 6 through Sunday October 9. Digital Art Revolution author Scott Ligon’s new short film Figure-Ground continues its film festival tour this week with the Silicon Valley Film Festival, sponsored by Apple and Avid! The festival takes place October 1 and 2 in beautiful Santa Clara, CA.

The Santa Clara Convention Center Theater, Home of SVFF

The film, a hybrid of animation and live action video, is a narrative of the directors father passing away.

Scott’s father is played by veteran actor Allan Kulakow, who has been in several movies, including Death by Dawn, Syriana, The Good Shepherd, and HBO’s Something the Lord Made. He appeared as the Joint Chief of Staff on West Wing.

Figure-Ground, Digital Art Revolution author Scott Ligon’s new short film about the death of his father, continues its film festival tour this week with two new festivals, both of which begin tomorrow.

The first is the venerable Buffalo Niagara Film Festival, whose guests have included Robert Redford, Aidan Quinn, and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

The other festival is the Atlanta Underground Film Festival, organized by the dynamic Eric Panter, founder of Atlanta’s Independent Film Month and its many festivals and events. We’re very excited to be part of both of these events!

Digital Art Revolution author Scott Ligon’s new short film Figure-Ground is in the midst of a film festival tour. This weekend, Figure-Ground is part of both the the Estes Park Film Festival in Estes Park, CO. and The 17th Annual Temecula Valley Int'l Film Festival in Temecula, CA.

At the same time, Scott’s first short film, Escape Velocity is playing tonight at 730 pm on the Documentary Channel. Escape Velocity is an animated film about the connection between ADHD and creativity. The Documentary Channel is Channel 197 on DISH Network and Channel 267 on DIRECT TV in the United States.

Figure-Ground Plays the Estes Park Film Festival

Figure-Ground, Digital Art Revolution author Scott Ligon’s new short film about the death of his father, is being shown as part of the Estes Park Film Festival, today through September 18 in Estes Park, CO. Scott Ligon’s first short film, Escape Velocity, was part of the very first Estes Park Festival a few years ago.

As mentioned in the previous blog post, Figure-Ground is also playing concurrently in The 17th Annual Temecula Valley Int'l Film Festival in beautiful Temecula, CA. The TVIFF began September 14 and runs through September 18. We are honored to be part of both of these events. Several more events are coming up. We’ll keep you posted. Figure-Ground Plays The 17th Annual Temecula Valley Int'l Film Festival

With the summer eBook release of Digital Art Revolution and the recent launch of the ambitious new Digital Canvas Initiative for foundation students at the Cleveland Institute of Art, we haven’t found time yet to tell you that Digital Art Revolution author Scott Ligon’s newest short film, Figure-Ground, has started it’s film festival tour.

Figure-Ground made its film festival debut as part of the Grand Rapids Film Festival in Grand Rapids MI, August 10 - August 12, and then went on to play the 2011 Rapphannock Independent Film Festival in Fredericksburg VA, August 25 - August 28. The movie was filmed in Fredericksburg using many local people, making this a homecoming of sorts.

Next on the schedules is The 17th Annual Temecula Valley Int'l Film Festival in beautiful Temecula, CA. Ian Hinkle, cinematographer for Figure-Ground will be attending as a guest of the festival. Director Peter Bogdanovich and Actress Virginia Madsen are among the featured guests and honorees appearing in this prestigious southern California Festival. The TVIFF begins tomorrow and runs through September 18. We are honored to be part of this amazing event.

I presented a multimedia lecture last night at the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia. The lecture was called “The Big Picture”. It was about the convergence of technology, commerce, creativity and education. In my presentation, I listed several people that are writers and thinkers in various fields that I saw as having many convergent ideas that supported my own ideas in my lecture. All of these people are among my personal heroes. After the lecture, an audience member asked me if I could provide links to the people I mentioned. I’m doing so here. Digital Art Revolution Author to be First Artist in Residence for Contemporary Art Center of Virginia

Digital Art Revolution author Scott Ligon will head back to his native Virginia on August 5. The Contemporary Art Center of Virginia, the leading contemporary art institution in Virginia, was recently awarded museum status, nationally accredited by the American Association of Museums! Scott Ligon has the honor of being the first Artist in Residence at the Museum.

The Digital Art Revolution author will teach two master classes, “The Blurring of Boundaries: Combining Digital and Physical Materials Using Photoshop” on August 6 and “Animation Using Photoshop and After Effects” on August 7.
